Surprise, surprise!

I was in the UK again last week, business as usual, and I come back home to a house torn apart!

Well, it was torn apart, but it was also mostly put back together again. You see, a couple months ago [info]j_marie and I had purchased some laminate flooring to replace all the carpets on the main floor of the house. We bought the flooring on sale, with the idea that her uncle (who is a professional flooring installer) would come into town one week and help us get it installed. (He offered the help as his wedding present to us.)

Lo and behold, while I was out of the country, [info]j_marie's family had descended upon our house last weekend and put in most of the flooring. We've still got one room left to do, and then we're looking at painting and getting new floorboards. I'd also really like to get some ceramic or stone tile put in the front and back door entrances before we get to the floorboards.

Now, as Bill Cosby would say, I told you that story so that I can tell you this one.

In the process of moving everything downstairs to make room for the flooring, [info]j_marie was careful to leave the bits of our network that are Chromehenge plugged in and running, so that nobody would have to experience any downtime. The server happens to be in the last room that needs to be done.

Mistakes do get made, though, and one of the necessary routers was unplugged, which effectively cut everyone off from Chrome.

I've decided to take advantage of this, though, and have moved Chromehenge to a room in which the floor has already been installed for the time being, so that we don't have to work around computers or cables. I'll move it back when the new floor is in place.

When moving the network equipment, my IP address got changed, so I've had to update my wonderfully hosted DNS service with the new address. It should take up to 24 hours for these changes to take effect, but different parts of the world will be able to get back on Chrome sooner as the address change gets updated on more systems in the DNS network.

When it comes time to move everything back, I'll have to do this again, so there may be a little more downtime if the IP address changes once more. However, everyone will get a little more advance notice, first.

Cool deal there. For a while, I thought that maybe they'd banned Chromehenge here at work. Which would have truly sucked.

Sadly, it shouldn't take more than half an hour to update. Except that I recently (friday) upgraded mysql, and didn't upgrade a necessary module for DNS updates to take affect. :/

Well, it's quick work like that which keeps me very happy with my DNS host. :)
